CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOL

How to choose hockey video review and editing software

“Hockey video software” can mean a tool for exporting highlights, a place to organize coaching feedback, or a system that tries to identify players and shifts. Start with the job you need done so you can compare the right features.

Ask these questions during a trial

  • Where is the source video hosted, and will every intended viewer be able to play it?
  • Can a coach save a moment quickly and include enough lead-in to explain the decision?
  • Can you share team moments and private assigned moments without exposing another player’s reflections?
  • Can players find relevant moments by their own tags, and can coaching staff filter by a player?
  • Do you need a downloadable edited file, or only a convenient way to revisit the original video?
  • Are the ratings self-reported, coach-entered or automatically measured? What does the software actually verify?
  • Will assistants use the tools, and does the plan include the roster and staff size you need?
  • What happens when you cancel renewal, remove a player or replace a team next season?

Test a real workflow rather than a feature list

Choose one game you already have permission to use. Create a small set of moments, assign one privately, tag the players involved and publish a short check-in. Have a player use the flow on the phone they normally carry. Ask an assistant to complete the same review task if staff collaboration matters.

Look for the points where the workflow becomes difficult: opening the source, finding the relevant moment, understanding the note, answering the question or returning to feedback. An annual price is easier to assess when you know whether you will repeat that workflow through the season.

  1. Prepare a representative game and one specific review focus.
  2. Save a few moments and confirm the audience controls.
  3. Invite a test player with their own email and login.
  4. Complete the phone check-in and read the feedback as that player.
  5. Review the account’s renewal and cancellation information before subscribing.

Understand Hockey Hub’s fit

Hockey Hub is designed for a connected review-and-reflection routine. Coaches and parent managers save time ranges from YouTube games, write notes, organize situation and on-ice player tags, and publish player check-ins. Players can watch visible moments and answer through their own accounts.

The core focus topics include manipulation and deception, offensive creation, scanning and awareness, and competitive habits. Managers can change future questions. Progress views show submitted self-ratings and completion; they do not independently grade performance or certify improvement.

If your main job is to export a polished highlight reel, you will need an editor with that output. If your requirement is automatic identification of every shift, evaluate demonstrated accuracy for your footage separately. That capability is not currently offered by Hockey Hub.

Compare the annual cost with the account limits

Hockey Hub costs $299 USD per managing account per year and includes up to two teams or private family workspaces the coach or parent creates and owns. Each supports 25 active players and three assistants. Invited players and assistants do not buy separate subscriptions.

Players can join multiple invited teams using the same email and login. Their membership count is not capped at two. The ownership allowance applies to the paying coach or parent. A family workspace stays separate from another club’s private team data.

Paid annual subscriptions renew automatically until canceled. Cancel before the next renewal through My Account to stop the next annual payment; access continues through the current paid period. A local 14-day trial begins without payment at account creation, and checkout is required before paid billing begins.

Make the choice using your requirements

Write down two or three jobs the tool must handle and one output you need at the end. For a coach, that might be “save a teachable moment, hear the player’s answer and find it again next week.” For a parent, it might be “keep a short private review routine my child can take part in.”

Use the trial to check those jobs directly. There is no need to choose a product because it claims to be the best for everyone. The useful choice is the one that matches your footage, your audience and the routine you can maintain.
